Each of these articles appeared in the WSJ on Monday. Volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity (VUCA) play out across market sectors every day. As a business owner, you are looking for ways to make 2019 better. As you look at your year end numbers, you want to make 2019 more profitable for your business.
More profit, fewer crises, these are goals that appeal to our brains. The question is, how to achieve these goals in this VUCA world. Last week I encouraged you to set up a gaming process to forecast and plan for contingencies.
This week we take another step towards achieving goals. As you and your team review the company’s performance last year, list the top 5 wins. Take those wins apart and examine what worked, what didn’t, who contributed what to the success. Identify areas where the team engaged in a process. Discuss the SWOT analysis for each win.
Next, identify the 5 losses that had the most impact on the organization. Follow the same process for those losses. Use this information to evaluate what the organization needs to implement that process in the deployment of resources to achieve the 2019 performance goals.
This process for forecasting and evaluating will be new to many of you. We all know that people resist change. We also recognize that the systems and processes that work for a new business don’t necessarily perform as well for a mature organization. As an owner/founder, you have the opportunity to introduce new systems and processes. I am always happy to lend my support to those conversations.
